Scanning Basics
How many dpi should I scan my photos and slides at?

Megapixels – more must be better? Yes, generally speaking the more megapixels or the higher resolution your camera is capable of means more detail will be captured.

Scanning resolution is interchangeably referred to as dots per inch (dpi) or pixels per inch (ppi).

A 4x6 photo print scanned at 300dpi results yields 1,200 x 1,800 dpi or 2,160,000 pixels or 2.16Megapixels. Pixels are picture elements made up of the three primary colors of Red, Green, and Blue or simply RGB. Computers store this color information in bytes, one byte for each color therefore 1 pixel equals 3 bytes. Our 2,160,000 pixels is equal to 6,480,000 bytes or 6.4 Megabytes (MB).

Creative Imaging Group scans prints at 300dpi or 600dpi and slides and film at 2500dpi, 3200dpi and 4000dpi. You should know that scanning at the highest resolution is not necessarily better. The quality of most film does not support the need for 4000dpi scans. Pending on the quality of the film scanning at too high a resolution may result in grainy images and needless large files.

In general, photos are only printed at 150 to 300 dpi so when scanning prints, there is no more than 300 dpi of picture data to recover. Scanning at a higher resolution gives you more pixels without more data. You can’t capture more “picture” than what you are starting with. You also need to be mindful of faults that older pictures might have such as scratches and fingerprints that will be picked up during the scanning process.

Creative Imaging scans to TIFF or JPEG files. TIFF files are large files but contain all the original scan data. JPEG files are more popular, about ¼ the size, but some data is lost to compression. JPEG files can be made from TIFF files with readily available conversion software.

Creative Imaging will review your photos, slides and negatives and recommend an appropriate scanning resolution for your application.
